There are a lot of compact low-cost telescopes out there that are very disappointing to use. I know, I have a major name backpack scope that I call “Shaky-scope”. That is not the case for the Spectrum Astrolite 60. I am a longtime stargazer with several scopes between 60 and 130mm aperture. First, this scope is lightweight, easy to assemble, and fits into the supplied bag that is a little longer than a backpack but easy to carry and store. The tripod is tall enough to sit on a portable stool and view. It is not very shaky, vibration settles down in a couple of seconds (good!) and the motions are smooth. The telescope optical quality is also above average, the eyepieces are a good choice for this scope and easy to look through. The Barlow works okay, but needs to be mounted directly in the focuser of the scope, with the diagonal and eyepiece mounted after that. The 20 eyepiece gives 25x, good for fainter objects and wider field views of star clusters and nebula, the 10 gives 50x, good for planets and double stars. The Barlow with 20mm gives around 75x, with the 10 gives 150x, but the image gets pretty degraded above 100x, which is normal for this size scope. The quality of the scope is plenty high enough to use high quality upgrade eyepieces, I also use a 7mm Plossl eyepiece for even sharper planetary views at 70x. The finder is small but good enough for bright objects, and you can focus it for best performance. There was a little plastic piece that helped keep the finder stable that fell out, I just wrapped the finder with a little tape until it fit snuggly in the holder, no problem, works great once I got it aligned to the scope. For me, this scope is a keeper and one that I will use often. Good job Spectrum!

Bought this refractor because of the 500mm focal length for a 60mm aperture. It is rare in a 60mm objective to find anything between 360mm and 700mm.
The telescope with diagonal is a compact 22 inches and weighs 1.5 lbs. with diagonal and 20mm eyepiece.
I have pushed this little gem to 140x or so but of course it is most useful in the 30x to 100x range.
I find it effortless to take out at a moment’s notice to take advantage of unexpected sky clearing.
Brighter deep sky objects are also in reach. The Orion nebula M42 and Pleiades M45 are lovely at 33x with a wide angle 15mm eyepiece, as is the double cluster.
I call mine ‘Goldilocks’ because it’s not too big…..and not too small, it is just right.

Sharp images, smooth focuser and above average stock eyepieces make this a diamond in the rough considering it is only $60. Get one and see for yourself. I really like f/8 speed, nice to the eye.
